The Watch with the 3D Effect
With the DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent, the Swiss manufacturer is expanding its popular GMT collection. The new model visually stands out significantly from previous GMT models in the Ternos series, such as the Professional or the Ceramic. Although the new design is built on the familiar technical foundation of its sister models, DAVOSA introduces fresh design elements and plays with the effect of sapphire crystal—a feature that is sure to draw attention to the bezel in today’s watch review. A reliable foundation paired with a visual twist? It certainly sounds very interesting and makes you want a GMT watch.
The DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent Unboxing
The DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent comes in a handy package familiar to customers. For this watch review, DAVOSA sent me, among other models, the reference number 161.592.02 with a red-and-blue “Pepsi” bezel and a PentaLink bracelet. There’s also a gray dial with a gray-and-red bezel to choose from. With five different bracelet options each (PentaLink, TriaLink, and rubber in red, black, and gray), that brings the total to 10 models. So there’s no need to worry about not finding your favorite color combination. I notice the 3D depth effect at first glance—it looks exciting.
Before I go into more detail about this special feature, let’s take a quick look at the PentaLink bracelet, which is a classic, high-quality five-link stainless steel bracelet that can be adjusted with a fine-tuning mechanism. So no tools are needed. Thanks to the folding clasp, it sits securely on the wrist and is very comfortable. I also got to test the red and gray rubber straps in the Tropical Style. For athletic activities, one of these two would be my first choice.
As a second model, I received reference 161.592.50 with a gray-red bezel on a three-link stainless steel bracelet. I really like this one right away, too.
What the 3D effect is all about
Aside from 3D technology in movie theaters or home theaters, you might also be familiar with the 3D effect from postcards featuring images that moved depending on the angle at which you viewed them—do those even exist anymore? In any case, the 3D effect DAVOSA refers to reminds me a bit of precisely this optical illusion.
The reason for this is the bezel. It’s domed and features a sapphire crystal insert. What’s important here is that this design element is combined with a sapphire crystal that’s also domed. This creates a unique, almost “floating” depth effect that’s hard to describe in words. You have to see it with your own eyes! Depending on the angle of the light, the numerals appear to float beneath the bezel. Especially in changing light conditions—such as those often encountered on the open sea—this effect makes the DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent look fresh and different time and time again. One might have thought that every possible GMT design had already been created—and then DAVOSA simply reinvents the classic GMT.
The bezel is, as expected, bidirectionally rotatable, features a GMT function, and is mounted on ball bearings for smoother operation. Generously applied Super-LumiNova BGW9 can be found on the applied hour indices, the hour and minute hands, and the numerals on the bezel.
Functional or Beautiful? The DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent is no compromise
You might already have guessed it. The Ternos GMT Lucent is anything but a mere accessory. This sporty, functional timepiece proves to be extremely robust and is therefore well-suited for a varied daily life that ranges from business trips to trips to the beach. The domed sapphire crystal is a useful design element. Due to its extraordinary hardness, it is one of the most durable materials in watchmaking. It reliably protects the dial—and, in this case, the bezel as well—from scratches, making the watch particularly long-lasting.
With a diameter of “only” 40 millimeters, the case is surprisingly compact. But I’m even more impressed by its sporty case thickness of 12 millimeters. The DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent remains understated on the wrist; it doesn’t scream for attention, but it can make a statement (depending on the choice of strap). The length of the case between the lugs is 48.5 millimeters. This means that wearers with larger wrist circumferences can wear this GMT watch with ease.
The case is made of 316L stainless steel and combines satin-finished and polished surfaces. This gives the watch a high-end look and sets it apart somewhat from a pure tool watch.
The crown and case back are screw-down, and the watch is water-resistant to 200 meters. While a bidirectional rotating bezel isn’t suitable for tracking remaining dive time, swimming and snorkeling are no problem with the DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent.
A Classic: The DAV 3032 Movement
Inside the Ternos GMT Lucent is the DAV 3032 caliber. This automatic movement is based on the Sellita SW330-1 with GMT function. The movement, which is well-established worldwide, impresses with its reliability and ease of maintenance. The power reserve is 42 hours, and the movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Its slim profile of 4.10 millimeters allows for the watch’s low profile.
In addition to hours, minutes, and seconds, the movement features a GMT and date function. Anyone who travels frequently for business will appreciate being able to read a second time zone.
My Conclusion on the DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent
Do we need another GMT watch? “No,” I would have answered before writing this review. But I stand by the fact that I’ve changed my mind. The DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent proves that an exciting design with a little twist can be enough to rekindle an interest in GMT watches. This reinforces my view that watches with a GMT function aren’t just for business travelers. With its 10 models, DAVOSA’s new collection in particular is a strong contender to be a versatile everyday watch on your wrist—one that also serves as a useful tool when traveling to a different time zone. The bezel with its sapphire crystal insert isn’t too bold, but rather stylish.
DAVOSA is known for its excellent value for money. The DAVOSA Ternos GMT Lucent is no exception. All models with a steel bracelet cost 1,790 euros. The models with a rubber strap are slightly more affordable at 1,650 euros. In return, the wearer gets high-quality materials, a reliable Swiss automatic movement, and Swiss craftsmanship. What more could you ask for?
