Even if you don’t know the family business POINTtec from Ismaning near Munich, you should still pay attention to the brand names of the German watch manufacturer. Iron Annie Bauhaus 50561.

Zeppelin or Junkers are watch brands with a long tradition and sonorous names. When the company celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017, the special model IRON ANNIE, a tribute to the famous Lufthansa-JU52 with the D-AQUI call sign, was launched on the market and received with enthusiasm. So it was decided to found an entire brand around the special model. The IRON ANNIE watches have won numerous awards since that.

In 2019, a new chapter will be added to this success story by adding new models to the popular Bauhaus series for its 100th anniversary. Especially the IRON ANNIE Bauhaus Automatic Ref. 5056 with its archetypal design stands out, it is the epitome of a three-hand wristwatch. Our story today revolves a bit around the Bauhaus, an old airplane, the IRON ANNIE brand, but above all, of course, around this wonderful wristwatch.

The first impression der Iron Annie Bauhaus 50561

…counts, as you know. And it’s incredibly good here. This IRON ANNIE 100th anniversary Bauhaus model is a real gem. And all in the style of its epoch, which it quotes. Classic, discreet and clear in design. Before we go any further into the design that has won awards, let’s take a quick look at the facts and figures. Our IRON ANNIE features a polished stainless steel case. The diameter is 40mm, the watch is a maximum of 11 millimetres high – these are dimensions that don’t get slain. The workmanship makes a particularly high-quality impression. At this point it should be mentioned that all IRON ANNIE models are Made in Germany.

Case and movement Iron Annie Bauhaus 50561

In the case beats a mechanical heart, a Swiss ETA 2824-2, or a Sellita SW 200 – virtually identical in construction and the epitome of a reliable Swiss automatic movement. It is clearly visible through the semi-glazed case back. The rotor is in the color gold, which we like very much. Several technical details are engraved in the case back. The watch is water-resistant up to a pressure of 5 bar, i.e. up to a depth of 50 metres.

An excursion into the past mit der Iron Annie Bauhaus 50561

How do Bauhaus design and a pilot’s watch fit together now? If we want to understand and experience the design of the watch, especially of the dial, we have to take a little trip into the past: to the legendary machine after which the IRON ANNIE brand is named. This aircraft, a Junkers JU-52, was built in 1936 and put into service by Lufthansa. In the 50s and 60s the aircraft was used from the North Cape to the Amazon rainforest and in the 70s it was finally bought by an American aircraft enthusiast who christened it “IRON ANNIE”.

n the 80s two Lufthansa pilots rediscovered the aircraft and brought it back to Germany. Until recently Lufthansa used the “Iron Annie” for special flights. And now the pieces of the puzzle fit together: Because the design of the “IRON ANNIE” follows the strict guidelines of the Bauhaus, which also experienced its heyday in the 1920s and 30s. Clear lines, functionality, restrained minimalism and straightforwardness distinguish the aircraft “IRON ANNIE” – and make it the icon it is today.

A watch that does justice to the Bauhaus anniversary

It is precisely this iconic design of the Bauhaus and the “IRON ANNIE” that makes this watch so special. The dial is white and slightly curved at the side edges. If you want more choice in colour, you can choose from the variants in noble black and dark blue. Classic Bauhaus: The sans serif and clear typography – black on white. This is very stylish and we really like it. Here you only find the most important things, no frills.

Just a classic three-hand watch. Printed on the dial is otherwise only the iconic IRON ANNIE logo and the identification of the special model. Additionally there is a date display. The dial is protected by mineral glass. The black, classic leather strap with good wearing comfort successfully rounds off the appearance of the watch.

Conclusion

IRON ANNIE duly celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus foundation with its edition. What all models have in common – the form that follows the function. Minimalist elegance meets perfect functionalism. And all this combined in a timeless design that distinguishes this still young brand. The awards that IRON ANNIE has won from experts are not surprising. Our model, the 5056 Automatic, is the allrounder in the special edition and our secret favourite. While other models are somewhat more technical or sporty, this watch is a good compromise, which unites all Bauhaus traits equally balanced in design. Simply simple, elegant and functional. For us a very successful homage to an iconic style.
