League of Legends explained – the most important things in a nutshell
This was unexpected! G-SHOCK is teaming up with Riot Games. The US game developer is responsible for no less a game than League of Legends. For those who haven’t noticed it yet: League of Legends, LOL for short, is a multiplayer online battle arena computer game. In other words, two teams of five players compete against each other, with each player controlling his or her own character. The goal of the game is to destroy the opponent’s nexus, i.e. base. League of Legends was conceived as a free-to-play title in 2009. The game can be downloaded for free, but additional content such as new characters must be paid for.
What sounds very simple at first glance has since developed into a complex cosmos. LOL demands team spirit and sophisticated strategies from you. There are individual characters with different abilities, a fantasy world and two different currencies. In the course of the game, you’ll learn new skills as champions and reach new levels by collecting experience points. Similar to FIFA or the F1 game, League of Legends has now developed into an e-sport. There is even an annual League of Legends World Championship, which is watched by up to 100 million viewers worldwide at its peak.
A cosmos expands – now also with clocks
It quickly becomes apparent that League of Legends is more than just a game. As of today, Monday, September 25, the world of LOL now also includes two watch models. As the watch partner of League of Legends and developer Riot Games, no better manufacturer than the Japanese brand G-SHOCK could have offered itself. It’s difficult to put the phenomenon into words. If I had been asked if there would be any overlap between watch lovers and fans of multiplayer strategy games, I would have answered strictly ‘no’. But now that the cooperation including first pictures has been published and I had a first look at the watches, I disagree. The Casio subsidiary G-SHOCK and LOL? That fits like a glove.
Last but not least, the “epic collaboration” (so the quote from G-SHOCK) represents another highlight in the anniversary year. After all, the brand celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023. That there would be something more was to be expected. In any case, the two presented references look promising, remain in the memory and could not be more different from each other. It’s best to take a closer look at the two watches in detail.
LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GA-110LL
The GA-110LL looks like it was the result of a school class abstract art project – I mean that in a good way. This watch is just bursting with energy, as evidenced by the splashes of color in cyan blue, yellow and magenta. The watch with the round dial is dedicated to Jinx. The LOL heroine is one of the most popular playable champions. Her popularity is reflected in the numerous cosplay costumes and fanarts. She is also a central main character in the League of Legends Netflix series Arcane. So who to dedicate a LOL-G-SHOCK to if not Jinx?
Playful details on the LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GA-110LL make the love for the game clear. Jinx’s pink rocket, for example, has made it onto the subdial hand at 9 o’clock. It can also be found on the strap, whose clasp is adorned with the game’s logo. They look especially stunning in the dark as soon as you press the Super Illuminator and the dial lights up.
The basis of the LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GA-110LL is the Casio G-SHOCK GA-110, which combines analog and digital dial elements as an entry-level model. LOL Fans who have had little or no previous exposure to Casio and G-SHOCK will especially appreciate the ruggedness and variety of functions. The shock-resistant timepiece is water resistant to depths of 200 meters. A world time, stop function, timer and alarms make the GA-110 quite suitable for everyday use. Also important for collector value is the round box that the LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GA-110LL comes in. Again, you’ll find the rocket here.
LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GM-B2100LL
Against the brightly colored Jinx homage, the LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GM-B2100LL again presents a completely different picture. G-SHOCK itself talks about the “Hextech fusion of magic, science and technology”. The term Hextech may need to be explained. Magic technology is applied in the game to create artifacts. And in reality? That’s where Casio first provides the bezel and parts of the bracelet with a gold ion plating, which makes the watch particularly robust. The secret behind the “used look” of the watch is clever. The golden coating is followed by a black coating, which is then partially scraped off again – an elaborate process with a breathtaking result.
Contrasting with the gold metallic design of the watch are the blue accents of the dial. Details such as the Piltover coat of arms (where Hextech originated) have been neatly engraved into the bracelet. Once again, the special packaging with collector’s value is part of the good tone.
The LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GM-B2100LL is based on the successful G-SHOCK GM-B2100 series. The distinguishing feature of all references is their characteristic octagonal bezel, reminiscent of the first G-SHOCK from 1983. Casio increasingly relies on high-quality materials such as stainless steel here, which makes the watch more premium compared to the representatives made of synthetic resin.
My conclusion about the collaboration: LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GM-B2100LL & GA-110LL
The test phase didn’t last for weeks, but at least I was allowed to get an idea of the collaboration a few days before market launch. The result so far is extremely positive. It seems as if what belongs together has come together. The LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GM-B2100LL & GA-110LL are mature special models, which fans will enjoy.
Both present themselves extremely creative, very different and rich in detail – that’s how watches must be, on whose shoulders lies the burden of an entire franchise! Slips, i.e. chumming up merchandising articles to pull money out of fans’ pockets, would also hardly be forgivable. G-SHOCK and Riot Games are miles away from that – at least that was my impression. This is also supported by the fact that someone like me, who had hardly any connections to the world of LOL so far, can definitely enjoy the references. So the GM-B2100LL & GA-110LL also work when you take off your fan glasses.
I find the pricing interesting. Not only visually, but also in terms of price, there are worlds between the two models. While you should think twice about buying the LOL x G-SHOCK League of Legends GM-B2100LL at an MSRP of 1,099.00 euros, the GA-110LL is much cheaper. Here, G-SHOCK quotes a price of 199.00 euros, which makes the model affordable for the masses.
