RALF TECH presents its new WRX models ROCKDUST & STARDUST. The special models, limited to 100 units each, are inspired ‘from the depths of the ocean to the infinite expanses of space’. I would like to use their introduction above all to tell you more about what is perhaps RALF TECH’s most important watch.
Perfection constantly evolving
With the RALF TECH WRX ROCKDUST & STARDUST models, the French diving watch specialist is presenting new versions of its popular classic, which is the first port of call in the RALF TECH collection for discerning marine divers, at Time-to-Watches in April 2025. The WRX has been around since 2007. In recent years, RALF TECH has continued to update the evergreen with new references, ensuring that the WRX remains the benchmark for professionals. The two new references were developed with the Centre d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES).
The introduction of the two new timepieces is particularly timely for me. For some time now, the WRX has been at the top of my list of watches that I really want to write a watch review about. So far, I have been able to take a closer look at the the RALF TECH Académie Automatic Manufacture First Edition. You can find this model, the WRX collection and, of course, the new WRX references STARDUST and ROCKDUST in my shop. Enough talk, let’s finally turn our attention to the two new diving watches.
On the trail of a world record
The history and success of RALF TECH are closely linked to breaking records and testing new limits, both technically and athletically. It all began in 2005 with a self-designed timepiece that made the former diving equipment dealer instantly famous. Deep-sea diver Pascal Bernabé sets a new world record in scuba diving. He beats the previous record of 318 metres by an impressive 12 metres. The watch he wears on his wrist later becomes known as the World Record 1 or WR1.
The WRX is based on this legendary model. However, the diver’s watch is not simply a visual homage to a high-performance model, but a well-respected and established watch in the military. Special forces use the WRX all over the world – for example in the fight against terrorism.
A movement that is second to none: the RTE001
The watch must therefore not only be robustly constructed, but also as durable as possible and low-maintenance. RALF TECH achieves this with a special movement that is unrivalled in the watch world and is the unrivalled highlight of the WRX. All RALF TECH WRX models are powered by an RTE001 micro-hybrid movement, which was developed in Switzerland. The RTE001 combines the advantages of two worlds: the precision of quartz movements with the robustness of mechanical calibres. Nevertheless, such a micro-hybrid movement is far superior to mechanical and quartz-operated movements.
The RTE001 achieves a running time of no less than 100,000 hours. That’s 12 years after which the battery needs to be replaced thanks to its extremely low energy consumption. This is a huge advantage for elite units, as the long service life means very little downtime. They also appreciate the low maintenance requirements and the high reliability of the movement. By contrast, automatic movements used in competitors’ military watches look outdated.
THE RTE001 was introduced in 2022 and first installed in THE BEAST. It is based on a hybrid movement that had previously powered the older WRX generations.
The case of the RALF TECH WRX STARDUST & ROCKDUST
STARDUST and ROCKDUST have the same body as other WRX models. Iconic is the square, domed shape that contrasts with the round bezel. The case is made from 316L surgical steel, which is particularly resistant to corrosion. A new feature is the case finish, which has now been sandblasted to match the rough, robust look of the dials of both watches.
At first glance, the brute case diameter of 47.50 millimetres may take some getting used to. However, the enormous size has two decisive advantages for professional use. Firstly, it makes the dial easier to read, and secondly, case components such as the bezel and crown are easy to operate even when wearing gloves. Lovers of particularly large watches will appreciate the WRX’s presence on the wrist.
Other key figures of the case are just as breathtaking as its size. RALF TECH is particularly proud of the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, which alone is 5.9 millimetres thick. The RALF TECH WRX is waterproof to depths of 1000 metres. The current world record for scuba diving is just a third of this distance. Nevertheless, the water resistance emphasises the special resilience of the housing. The water resistance of 1000 metres is achieved by an innovative encapsulation system. According to RALF TECH, it is therefore sufficient to service the WRX every 10 years.
The case is resistant to temperatures from -50 to +55 degrees Celsius, as well as to shocks and vibrations. The bezel can be turned unidirectionally and has 120 clicks.
Not only technically, but also visually successful: the design of the RALF TECH WRX
I like the new dial with its micro-grained texture. I like the two colours black (for the STARDUST) and brown (for the ROCKDUST), although I like the combination of the brown ROCKDUST with the classic brown leather strap a little better this time. However, this is a matter of taste. Due to the sandwich construction of the dial, the indices are embedded in the dial. This makes the dial appear more visually appealing and gives it more depth. The readability is superb – which is what you should expect from a professional military watch.
The design is right. RALF TECH delivers its WRX in a black case. In addition to the leather strap, you will also find an optional black rubber strap for use under water and tools for changing the strap.
My conclusion on the RALF TECH WRX STARDUST & ROCKDUST
RALF TECH particularly emphasises the special design of the dials on its new WRX. The inspiration of meteorites, moon rocks and Martian soil is a nice gimmick in my eyes. However, the real highlights of the WRX can only be recognised at second glance, as they are largely invisible to the eye.
On the one hand, there is the housing, which with its robust construction defies all external influences. Secondly, the WRX is characterised by its innovative micro-hybrid movement. Both aspects ensure that the RALF TECH WRX is an incredibly powerful yet uncomplicated watch for professional purposes that needs to be serviced once a decade (!).
Do mere mortals like you and me need such watches on our wrists? Certainly not. However, asking this question as a watch enthusiast is more than obsolete. We are more interested in appreciating the special technology and aesthetic design of a watch. The RALF TECH WRX undoubtedly offers both.
It also comes at an extremely fair price. The RALF TECH WRX STARDUST and ROCKDUST cost just 2,500,00 euros. You don’t have to look far for competitor models with price premiums of 100%. That’s enough arguments in favour of the WRX, isn’t it?
You can buy the RALF TECH WRX STARDUST and ROCKDUST in my shop. However, with quantities of only 100 each, you should be quick. Given the popularity of this model, the references could sell out quickly.
