Good watches in the iconic Bauhaus design belong to every watch collection. The watch company POINTtec has founded its own watch label under the name Bauhaus. This is where you should find the perfect watch – like the Bauhaus Automatic Watch 2162
No other watch is as suitable as a dress watch. Very few are as stylish, adaptable and timelessly classic as good Bauhaus watches. Since the 100th anniversary in 2019, these chic timepieces have never been so trendy. This makes it all the more difficult to find a suitable Bauhaus watch for you. POINTtec, based in Ismaning near Munich, which was previously known for its Zeppelin and Iron Annie watch brands, gave me three interesting new Bauhaus automatic watches!
Die neue Marke Bauhaus
The Bauhaus, founded in 1919 as a design and architecture school, is legendary today. It’s new design language, which is characterized by clear lines, functionality and minimalism, has had far-reaching influences in architecture, fashion, photography and design to this day. True to the motto “form follows function”, the design language is immediately recognizable – even on watches. Wearers of Bauhaus watches appreciate the reduced and simple design language, the elegant, accomplished design and the pleasant reserve.
In the same style, the Jena architects constructed a building in 1929 in Ruhla, Thuringia, for the Gebrüder Thiel GmbH, which would later become famous as VEB Uhrenwerke Ruhla and made the small town next to Glashütte famous as a watch manufacturer town. Since then, watches have always been manufactured here – the Bauhaus building itself has long been listed as a cultural monument of the city of Ruhla.
In August 2019 POINTtec took over the watch production, the Bauhaus building and the watch museum located in it and thus integrated the location completely into the family business, after decades of contract assembly. To celebrate the takeover, the new Bauhaus watch label was created. According to POINTtec, the independent brand will offer high-quality watches in the classic design of the Bauhaus at moderate prices. In keeping with a goal of the name-giving design philosophy to make well-designed products affordable for many.
The first impression
Bauhaus has launched a total of 10 new models in recent months. Of these, 7 quartz and 3 automatic versions. I was allowed to test the newly released timepiece with automatic movement in all three model variants.
The automatic watch with the reference number 2162 is the first mechanical movement of the new brand. All three variants with the dial colors white, anthracite and dark blue are now on my desk with different leather straps. Unpacked they make a very valuable first impression. The label is still dangling from the leather strap. 279 Euro – and that for an automatic watch in an exclusive design. We will now find out whether these are recommendable Bauhaus automatic watches.
The enclosed instruction manual shows a photo of the famous Bauhaus architecture. The leather straps have different shades of brown: tobacco brown, dark brown and corn brown – simple and classic colors.
One after the other I put the three watches on their backs and look at them on my wrist. The dials have a moderate size of 41 millimeters. This is a size that is usual for dresswatches. I have a rather narrow wrist. The proportions harmonize. Bauhaus chose the measurements wisely. The automatic watch in all three dial colors goes well with business shirts, casual jackets and festive suits. With its minimalist design, it is always restrained and can complete a successful outfit.
The details of a Bauhaus Automatic Watch 2162
In addition to reduced aesthetics, the choice of material is just as decisive. Bauhaus has opted for a curved stainless steel case. The metal convinces by its durability and robustness. The rounded, clear forms are typical of the design language of the school of architecture founded in Weimar. Form follows function. Last but not least, I think the appearance of the polished stainless steel is very successful.
With a diameter of 41 millimeters, the Bauhaus automatic watch is 13 millimeters high and weighs just 65 grams, which is achieved through the intelligent use of materials. Instead of frequently used sapphire, Bauhaus uses significantly lighter K1 safety glass. This is considered to be almost as scratch-resistant and is also cheaper to grind into the classic, rounded shape at the edges, which is part of the design. I personally like this rational approach very much, especially since K1 glass can be described as absolutely robust enough for everyday use.
Inside the case beats a movement from Citizen/MIYOTA. The Japanese manufacturer the Cal. 8285 with 21 jewels here. The mechanical movement with automatic winding runs very long and reliably.
My highlight: the back
My highlight of the Bauhaus automatic watch is definitely the back. Here Bauhaus has installed a circular viewing window, through which you can admire the movement. The glass bottom provides a view of the many individual screws, gears and the flywheel mass. Individual specifications are neatly engraved on the edge in a clockwise direction. The engravings also show the water resistance. This is 5 bar/ATM. The Bauhaus is certainly not a diver’s watch, but it is certainly ready for everyday use. It is better not to shower or swim with this watch, just because of the leather strap.
The stainless steel crown at 3 o’clock has a rippled surface, which makes the operation and adjustment of the watch very easy. At this point I would like to praise the already mentioned manual, which is explained in a simple and understandable way.
The dial is as plain as it could possibly be – almost. Because there is still one feature that stands out and makes the watch something special. Above 12 o’clock there is a so-called “large day display”. It shows the days of the week written out in full and thus supplements the rectangular date window at 3 o’clock. Both windows are neatly cut out of the dial and the display is perfectly centered.
The dial does not offer much more information. In addition to Arabic hour indications, the minute markers are neatly printed in the form of small dots. A red minute hand on both the blue and white dials sets colorful accents. The dial contains all important information about time, date and day of the week. Just what you need – and nothing more. That is Bauhaus.
I would not like to decide which dial color I like best. It could hardly be more classic than the white dial. But the anthracite and blue versions with their sunburst look also have their charm.
The leather strap of a Bauhaus Automatic Watch 2162
Perhaps it is important to know which bracelet the particular watch is equipped with. Depending on the watch, this is dark, corn or tobacco brown. The bracelets are made of Italian calfskin, which feels incredibly soft, especially on the inside. The wearing comfort is correspondingly good. Over the days I had no problem getting used to the new leather, which can sometimes happen with new watches. Loving embossing can be found on the inside as well as on the outside. Here you can find the well-known Bauhaus lettering. The lugs are very discreet and filigree and the bracelet itself is processed without visible seams. Very minimalistic
My conclusion about the Bauhaus Automatic Watch 2162
The conclusion about this watch could not be more clear! The Automatic 2162 does everything right as a Bauhaus automatic watch. It unites all the features of the design language and combines them with conclusive materials to a very successful total work of art. Sufficient choice is also available with the three modern dial and bracelet tones.
A price of just 279 Euros shows that the new brand Bauhaus is not only aimed at the POINTtec regular audience, but also wants to reach more inexperienced customers. An investment in this timeless watch is definitely worthwhile. The classic, minimalist design fits every outfit and every occasion. The materials guarantee the use as a longtime Daily Rocker. Last but not least you get a lot of watch for the price. If that is still too expensive for you, you should take a look at the somewhat cheaper quartz watches from Bauhaus.
