Just in time for the beginning of spring 2022, Citizen renews its Aqualand diving watch collection. New colors, well-tried functions and recently a luminous dial. But is the Citizen Promaster Aqualand still a timeless classic?
The presentation isn’t bad. Creative attempts to incorporate the diving theme into the design of the packaging have been made by a number of watch brands. Citizen, the largest watch manufacturer in the world, chooses a solution that is actually obvious. When unpacking, you find a bright yellow mini edition of a diving bottle. In its black bottom is the Aqualand itself. Actually, it’s much too bad to let this unconventional watch box disappear in the drawer.

Experienced Citizen wearers will quickly find their way around and can dispense with the included instruction manual. Aqualand models are characterized by a digital display, on which functions can be read, which are not found on conventional diving watches. The prominent sensor at 9 o’clock measures current dive data. In doing so, the diver can find out about the elapsed dive time, the current dive depth and the maximum possible dive depth. The latter is a solid 200 meters. If the ascent speed is too high and thus hazardous to health, the watch emits a warning tone. Nevertheless, you don’t have to do without classic functions like the unidirectional rotating diving bezel.
The functions are driven by a conventional quartz movement. Unfortunately, this Citizen Promaster Aqualand JP2007-17W does not have the environmentally friendly Eco Drive. The solar-powered movement would have made battery changes unnecessary and saved valuable resources.
Numerous functions at a reasonable price
On the positive side, the Citizen Promaster Aqualand’s light weight stands out at just 111 grams. Despite a stainless steel case and a masculine diameter of 44 millimeters, this is a remarkable value. Thus, the Aqualand impresses with a very good wearing comfort, which is also contributed by the practical silicone strap. The components are processed at a high level. This is often not a matter of course in the mid three-digit price segment.
Probably the most outstanding feature of the reference JP20007-17W is its luminous dial. In daylight, it appears bright and cream-colored. As soon as you wear the watch in the dark, however, it glows a poisonous green, making it easier to read. This is basically not bad, even if the minute hand could have used a few millimeters more in length. The dial is protected by scratch-resistant and lightweight mineral glass.

With the Aqualand, Citizen has a diving watch in the assortment, which offers many functions at a reasonable price. If you are looking for a reliable measuring instrument for diving, you will find it here. Visually, the JP2007-17W is trendy with its luminous dial. Therefore, the total package for 429 euros is worth it!
