The Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600KH-1 is the result of an exciting collaboration between Japanese watch brand, skateboarder Kelvin Hoefler and skateboard brand Powell Peralta. Creative street style? Or is it rather the rule that too many cooks spoil the broth?
A collaboration between three icons
Kelvin Hoefler learned skateboarding on the streets of Brazil. He has been a professional skateboarder since 2011 and has been successful at events around the globe. His greatest triumph to date may well have been the silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. His extraordinary achievements also caught the attention of Casio’s TEAM G-SHOCK, for whom the American by choice now serves as brand ambassador. After all, successful athletes and sports-inspired watch brands have always been a good match.
“His watch,” the Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600KH-1, however, is a collaboration between three parties. The well-known US skateboard brand Powell Peralta has been brought on board. Together, the two brands are now to bring concentrated street style power to the wrist. The DW-5600 alone has enough potential and street credibility for this. Its classic G-SHOCK look is reinforced by the arrow-shaped basic pattern, for which Kelvin Hoefler is known. The red accents bring temperament to the design. And a special eye-catcher in my eyes is the skull with the mask, which fans also know from Kelvin Hoefler’s skateboard. So actually we are dealing with a rather simple design, but one that leaves a lasting impression and looks incredibly creative.
Small details like the signature of the professional skateboarder engraved on the steel case back complete the overall package.
What the Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600KH-1 has to offer
By the way: if you press a button to activate the LED backlight of the display, the Powell Peralta logo appears in the background. The display still remains legible. The Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600KH-1 can also score with other functions. These include, for example, a stopwatch, a timer, an alarm with hourly time signal and a calendar – just the basics that you need.
What’s important when skating is a robust construction that can withstand collisions with skateboards, concrete or asphalt. For this, Casio relies on its well-known resin, a plastic mixture. The case and wristband are made of it. This forgives scratches and ensures a pleasant wearing experience. The watch weighs just 52 grams. I am also amazed by the water resistance, which Casio states at a proud 20 bar. This makes the Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600KH-1 a diving watch.
The battery is designed for a runtime of 5 years. The accuracy is +/- 15 seconds per day.
As befits a special edition, there is of course a special box that matches the design of the watch.
Conclusion: a chic special edition model that will be remembered for its design. Combined with the reliable G-SHOCK genes, it becomes a watch that is more than just fanservice/merchandising. Currently, the just released watch costs 149.00 euros. There is no limitation.
