The Hanhart AQUASPHERE has been around since 2025, and technically nothing about it has changed since. Only the colour has. After the blue FreeFall Blue and the blue-to-black Ocean Fade, here is the third act: the Hanhart AQUASPHERE Matte Black. Black dial, black ceramic inlay in the fluted bezel, and a single red accent on the seconds hand. The diver from Gütenbach in the Black Forest comes with three strap options and three reference numbers of its own.

Hanhart shows the Matte Black in a film of its own:
The third colour of a watch that has otherwise stayed the same
Hanhart has been known for pilot’s watches and stopwatches since 1882. The AQUASPHERE was the step into the water, and it was a serious diver from day one: 30 bar of water resistance to DIN 8310, a helium escape valve, a unidirectional bezel and a screwed case back. The AQUASPHERE FreeFall Blue started it all in 2025, and I took a long look at how it performs in practice back then.

The second colourway was the AQUASPHERE Ocean Fade – a dial that runs from blue into black, with either a blue or a black bezel.

The Matte Black is number three. It is technically identical to both of its predecessors – so if you want to know how this watch wears, how crisply the bezel clicks and how well it reads, the videos above already answer all of it. The only new thing here is the colour scheme.

Case, bezel and legibility
The stainless steel case measures 42 millimetres across, stands 12.95 millimetres tall and spans 49 millimetres from lug to lug. Surfaces are brushed, edges are polished. Above the dial sits a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

The fluted bezel is the AQUASPHERE’s signature. It carries a black ceramic inlay, turns counter-clockwise only and clicks through 60 positions – one per minute. On the Matte Black the contrast between bezel and dial all but disappears; what remains is the red triangle on the zero marker.

The watch is water resistant to 30 bar, tested to DIN 8310 – that is 300 metres. At nine o’clock sits a helium escape valve, which releases built-up pressure from the case when surfacing from a saturation diving bell. The case back is screwed down, carries an embossed underwater scene and an engraved serial number.

Hands, indices and the bezel triangle are filled with Super-LumiNova C1 GL X2. With an all-black dial this is exactly the point where a diver is won or lost – and here it works.

The movement
Inside works a Swiss automatic calibre, either a Sellita SW 200-1 or a Soprod. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 hertz, runs on 25 jewels and holds a 38-hour power reserve. It shows hours, minutes, seconds and the date. This is not a movement that makes headlines – but it is one that every watchmaker knows and can service. On a watch meant to go into the water, that counts for something.
Three straps, three references
Hanhart does not sell the Matte Black as one watch with accessories, but as three separate references. All three share the same case, the same movement and the same dial – only the strap differs. Lug width is 20 millimetres, and quick-release spring bars let you swap straps without tools.

On the wrist
42 millimetres sounds like a lot, but at 49 millimetres lug to lug it is not. The 12.95 millimetre height is remarkably slim for a watch with 300 metres of water resistance and a helium valve – it disappears under a shirt cuff, which is far from a given in this class of diver.

My take
I am a blue guy, really. That is exactly why I gave the FreeFall Blue a long look back then, and I found the Ocean Fade with its fade into black almost more exciting still. And yet: the Matte Black has grown on me more than either of the blue versions.
Almost all of that comes down to the matte dial. Matte swallows the light instead of throwing it back, and that makes the watch look calmer and more expensive than any glossy version. Together with the black ceramic bezel inlay it creates one continuous dark surface, with nothing left in it but the white lume and the red seconds hand. It looks really good – and it is completely timeless. A matte black diver will look just as right in five years as it does today.
Technically nothing has changed against its two predecessors, so everything said about them still applies. But if I had to pick one of the three AQUASPHERE today, it would be the black one.
