The Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER is the new shooting star in the G-SHOCK family and the youngest member of the popular 5000 series. But it’s like so often with the beautiful watches of this world – they are extremely rare. Impossible to get your hands on this watch? Not for me. I was allowed to test one of them even before the market launch…
The next highlight of the 5000 series
So the new year can start – with a highlight. In the 5000 series, which now includes more than a dozen watches, there is a new model. Taken by itself, this would not be worth a special announcement. New additions are constantly being discovered here, and I tested several of them in my blog posts and YouTube videos last year alone; I think there were four of them.
To be honest, it’s still worth taking a closer look at the GMW-B5000 abbreviation. After all, the last appearances I wore on my wrist were all smashers that I still remember well today. Statement watches that not everyone owns. Add to that the historical relevance of the series, which is visually based on the very first G-SHOCK ever and adopts the characteristic features of the DW 5000C-1A from 1983.
Limited to 530 models worldwide?
You could have that for just over 100 euros, as the Casio G-SHOCK GW-M5610U-1ER proves. But if you want something more comfortable and upscale, in the past you’ve reached for the 5000 models, into which Casio likes to build lightweight titanium, a Bluetooth connection and other technical refinements. Two examples that come to mind off the top of my head are the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TVB-1ER and the Casio G-SHOCK MRG-B5000B-1DR. The latter was one of THE highlights of the Japanese watch manufacturer par excellence in 2022.
This new GMW-B5000TCC-1ER follows the same tradition. The new flagship of Casio’s premium series wants to be lighter, more beautiful and even more exclusive. Only 530 units are to go on sale worldwide. It seems the new 5000 in the technical look would be out of stock before it has even been released. According to official information, the market launch will take place in February. Nevertheless, Casio was kind enough to send me a test model. Whether you’ve already pre-ordered your new G-SHOCK or you’re thinking of somehow getting one of the watches – this watch review is worth it!
Even though I didn’t receive any official packaging myself, pictures have already been published showing a box in the design of the circuit pattern that also adorns the bezel and bracelet of the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER. For fans, a worthy presentation that underlines the exclusive character of this limited edition.
The Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER on the wrist
I already posted how much I like the circuit pattern design when the first product photos were released. Now that I’m wearing the watch on my wrist, it doesn’t lose any of its magic and just looks great. Unlike the other models in the 5000 series, the GMW-B5000TCC-1ER has a reflective surface rather than a matte, understated design. I’ll explain in detail later how the unusual look was implemented.
On the wrist, the TCC shows its strengths as a statement watch. In my eyes, it fits best with streetwear and high fashion. There it rounds off a successful outfit. Oversize T-shirts and hoodies, baggy jeans, a cap and your favorite sneakers are thus optimally set in scene.
We wear such garments, among other things, because we like it comfortable and practical. The GMW-B5000TCC-1ER also meets these criteria as a lightweight as well as with a wristband that is even suitable for allergy sufferers.
The circuit pattern
With moderate dimensions of 49.30 by 43.20 millimeters, Casio’s extravagant digital watch weighs just 104 grams. By comparison, GMW-B5000 models made of stainless steel weigh 167 grams, and an MT-G with carbon components still weighs just under 150 grams. Nothing can compete with a wristwatch made of titanium.
However, Casio wouldn’t be Casio if we were dealing with any titanium material. The first major innovation of the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER is TranTixxii, a titanium alloy developed by the Nippon Steel Corporation. Behind the name, which takes a bit of getting used to, is a material that is said to be twice as hard as pure titanium, which has been used in most watches on the market to date. It also has anti-corrosive and hypoallergenic properties. This means that (with the right treatment) you can look forward to a long life and a pleasant feeling on the skin.
However, we do not have TranTixxii to thank for the exciting camouflage pattern in the circuit design. The reflective surface in gray and black comes from an IP coating that additionally protects the case from contact with objects and annoying scratches. By laser engraving, which is applied before and after the ion plating, the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER gets the switching circuit pattern, which seems to have depth due to different shades of gray. It was inspired by the circuitry of the internal No. 3459 module used on the GMW-B5000 series.
Case details of the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER
The mirrored surfaces combine the progressiveness of modern materials with the timeless look of classic stainless steel. The implementation also scores full points, as the workmanship is impeccable. Other amenities make the already good impression of the case even better. The module inside the case is protected by a special gel that cushions it in case of knocks or an impact. This ensures shock resistance. On the back, Casio has equipped the solid titanium case with a screwed case back including a DLC coating.
Sapphire glass on the front protects the display and makes a high-quality impression that matches the premium level of the rest of the materials. No surprise: the case is water resistant up to a pressure of 20 bar. You can therefore take the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER with you on dives.
All the important functions you need to know!
If you have several G-SHOCKs from the four-digit price segment and/or the 5000 series in your collection, you will probably already nod the following functions as a matter of course. Everyone else will enjoy smartwatch-like features in a watch that is nevertheless not a smartphone on the wrist and can also be operated without an additional app.
Nevertheless, the G-SHOCK Connected app makes things easier. After installation and Bluetooth connection with the watch, you can select your or any time zone here, set up to 5 daily alarms and a timer. Thanks to radio signal reception, you don’t have to worry about the accuracy of your watch. I also find the Flight Log Memory function interesting. At the touch of a button, the watch stores your location with GPS accuracy and later displays it on a map in the app. A phone finder emits a sound if you have misplaced your phone.
The clear display shows the day of the week as well as a charging indicator. A super illuminator lights up the display in the dark.
These features are powered by a solar drive, where the solar cells are hidden under the display and feed the battery in the module with energy. Surplus energy can be stored and retrieved later. In energy-saving mode, a G-SHOCK “survives” several months in the dark without going out. In contrast to conventional battery-powered watches, there is no need to change the batteries.
Comfortable and uncomplicated: the wristband
Like the case, the bracelet is also made of lightweight titanium. Here, the IP coating with its special circuit pattern is used again. The level of detail is high. In everyday use, the bracelet feels very comfortable. A safety folding clasp ensures optimal hold.
My conclusion about the Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER
The Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000TCC-1ER is a watch that has more surprises in store than meets the eye. At first, it looks like another edition of the 5000 series in a limited design. However, if you take a closer look at the digital watch, it quickly becomes clear that the GMW-B5000TCC-1ER is also convincing on the technical side. The implementation of the special titanium alloy and ion plating is first class. Many advantages of the materials and processes noticeably improve everyday comfort and longevity of the watch.
The mass of functions, which Casio has not skimped on this time, takes a back seat. In the premium segment, you almost take them for granted at this price.
A good watch all around, isn’t it? The only remaining problem is the limitation. With a production number in the mid three-digit range, it’s almost impossible to buy a new one now. Accordingly, the prices on the used market will shoot up. Casio itself states an MSRP of 1,790.00 euros. Only measured against that, it’s a fair deal.
In the following, as always, I have linked you all the important, further pages, stores and articles.
