The Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX is a very special watch in two ways. First, the digital watch celebrates the movie premiere of the latest Matrix installment, The Matrix Resurrections. Second, the design of the PSR series is based on the legendary Hamilton Pulsar, the first ever digital wristwatch! If that’s not enough reason to check out the futuristic timepiece!

Unboxing & First Look Video Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX H52434130

The return to the Matrix

Christmas 2021 was also the launch of a highly anticipated cinema blockbuster. As the fourth part of the popular franchise, “The Matrix Resurrections” picks up where the science fiction saga left off, the first part of which thrilled an audience of millions in 1999 and won a whole four Oscars. I was infected by the Matrix at the time and have since stopped counting how many times I’ve seen the film. Yes, THE film. For as exciting and fascinating as “Matrix” was, the two sequels were – let’s put it mildly – modest.

Almost 20 years after the third part, “Matrix Revolutions”, the makers want to do it again and introduce the next generation to the computer-generated dream world. As in the late 90s, Hollywood stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are on board in their original roles. I haven’t seen the new film yet. But I will catch up as soon as it appears on one of the streaming providers. So why not pass the time with a matching watch?

Timeless icon or merchandise product?

Hamilton is celebrating the reboot of the blockbuster series with a futuristic watch model designed to set the mood for “The Matrix Resurrections.” Now part of the Swatch Group, the watch brand with U.S. roots has been known for appearances in the great works of film history since everyone. According to Hamilton, there are more than 500 films to date in which the brand’s timepieces have appeared in the picture.

In 1970, they launched the first digital wristwatch in mass production, having already introduced the world’s first electric watch in 1957. A prototype of the watch called “Pulsar” already appears in Stanley Kubrick’s space opera “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Since then, the extravagant Pulsar has stood for so-called retro-futurism like no other watch. Today, the PSR series continues the legacy of the space watch.

The Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX with the reference number H52434130 joins the collection. Limited to 1999 pieces in reference to the release year of the first Matrix movie, the special model is finished with a black PVD coating and displays the time via green LCD numerals. As of the end of February 2022, all copies of the special edition are sold out. I was able to buy a watch in time. Whether the private purchase was worth it? I will find out in the watch review!

In the unboxing

I can only hope that the H52434130 has more to offer besides the (obvious) fanservice and is not just another merchandise product. In this respect, however, I have not been disappointed by Hamilton so far. Let’s see what the futuristic watch has to offer at first glance.

Fanservice – as I can tell when unboxing the new model. And yes, that’s a compliment! Hamilton seems to have spared no expense or effort and has packaged its futuristic digital watch in a box whose design is second to none. The famous coding has been stamped into the outside of the lid, which, in combination with the green background, makes quite a statement. At the latest now I have the Matrix theme “Clubbed to Death” in my head. I probably won’t get rid of the earworm until the end of this review. In a double bottom you can find the warranty card as well as various manuals. But back to the high-quality and creative box. I open it and free the PSR MTX. As expected, the name suffix “MTX” stands for “Matrix”.

Personally, I like the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX right away. Sure, you have to like the futuristic design. In its dimensions and technical features, the MTX with reference number H52434130 is similar to the other PSR models. What’s unique, besides the green display, is the PVD coating that gives the watch its black look. For the fans among you, black is the favorite color of main character Neo.

The Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX in Hands On

I especially like the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX on the wrist. The special look, what the watch radiates here, can not be compared with any other model. One may find it breathtaking as I do. However, I also understand everyone who does not warm to the design. The Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX can definitely convey that certain “Matrix feeling”. And that’s what it has to measure up to.

There is no question of a diameter due to the non-circular case. With dimensions of 40.80 mm x 34.70 mm, the digital watch still has a moderate size.

Good quality case

Let’s now take a look at the case, aside from the special shape. Here, you can clearly see the premium claim that the Hamilton brand cultivates. For a price of just under CHF 1000 , you can expect that. The brushed surfaces with the durable and protective PVD coating were implemented very well. There is nothing to complain about. A high-quality stainless steel core is hidden under the black casing, which guarantees additional longevity. However, even the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX is not immune to micro scratches and similar dangers. All the more care should be taken with the digital watch if it is to remain as good as new in a few years.

A special feature of the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX is the case back. Contrary to expectations, the caseback is round, which you wouldn’t expect from the design of the front. In addition, it was screwed six times, which is also unusual for a digital watch. In terms of design, the back of the MTX differs significantly from the other PSR models. At this point, the matrix coding appears again, neatly stamped into the stainless steel.

Hamilton states that the Matrix PSR MTX is water resistant to a depth of 100 meters. That’s at least enough to go swimming with the watch with a clear conscience. However, I would refrain from doing anything else. The Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX is not a diver’s watch.

On the front, anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the display from external influences. Characteristically, it protrudes far above the case.

Movement and functions of the display

Inside the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX, a quartz movement drives the functions of the digital watch. But – functions? Actually, the PSR MTX can’t do much more than display the time with the help of its green digits. Friends of extensive functions of digital watches a la Casio will perhaps be disappointed. This terrain is not the specialty of the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX.

Nevertheless, the pusher has a very interesting function. If you hold it down, the so-called hybrid display switches between OLED and LCD. While the energy-saving LCD crystals glow permanently, the OLED display is switched on manually. The numbers are then displayed by individual dots. What’s the point? Well, the OLED display is clearly the better and brighter alternative for operation in the dark. During the day, on the other hand, the LCD display is sufficient – practical!

Finally, let’s take a look at the wristband. It follows the shape of the case and tapers towards the clasp. This results in a correspondingly decent lug width of 24 millimeters. In the area of the clasp, however, the bracelet is only 19 millimeters wide. For the clasp, Hamilton uses the well-known and proven butterfly mechanism, which ensures a secure hold.

Like the case, the three-link bracelet is also made of stainless steel. Externally, it has also been finished with a PVD coating.

My conclusion about the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX

Did it take a watch like the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX? An icon with cult status or just merchandise to profit from the hype of the movie? The test shows that the new special model is definitely a good and successful wristwatch, which knows how to convince in terms of quality. High-quality materials and the usual impeccable workmanship stand for Swiss quality standards and justify a price of CHF 995,-, which is far above the average digital watches.

That the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX was also designed to be sold to loyal Matrix fans and thus new customers is no secret and legitimate. In doing so, however, Hamilton proceeds very carefully and with great attention to detail. The great box is an example of this. In conclusion, the Hamilton Matrix PSR MTX is a mixture of timeless icon and nostalgia bonus. A mixture that I love to wear on my wrist!
