At first glance, the MeisterSinger Perigraph AM1007OR is an extraordinary watch. MeisterSinger has chosen its own path and designed a mechanical watch with only one hand on the dial. What makes this special watch special, how does time reading work, what is it about the single hand and the two rings on the dial and does the perigraph really manage to create a completely new sense of time?

MeisterSinger Perigraph AM1007OR – The first impression: visually appealing and very good quality.

The MeisterSinger Perigraph AM1007OR is a mechanical watch that displays its finely crafted mechanics through the transparent case back to the outside. Our example comes in a version with an anthracite dial and a crocodile pattern calfskin strap. It is immediately noticeable that the case is exceptionally thin and measures just 11mm at its thickest point. The perigraph is driven by a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement, recognizable by the glass back with the logo of the German watch manufacturer printed in gold. There is nothing to complain about here.

The automatic movement with its fine mechanics looks cleanly finished.  As case material stainless steel is used, which is polished and the already very high quality impression even strengthened. The use of polished stainless steel is also once again found in the bracelet of the buckle, which also bears the logo of the brand. The bracelet itself has a white seam and is extremely comfortable to wear. Those who prefer a different bracelet can choose between two further versions: cognac suede and classic Milanaise bracelet. The Perigraph is water-resistant up to a pressure of 5 bar, but nobody wants a diver’s watch and the Perigraph doesn’t want to be that.

MeisterSinger Perigraph AM1007OR – A dial that has it in it

The anthracite-coloured dial catches the eye, the markings are white, the numbers and the hands gold. The sapphire crystal is slightly curved. Only a single, long hour hand, reminiscent of a fine needle, rotates on the dial of the watch. Further plus points are the design, which is very restrained, reduced and minimalist. But you get suspicious when you try to read the time. Because somehow it seems to work differently here. Does the MeisterSinger Perigraph really come from a different time? Whoever asks himself this question has every reason to do so. The watch manufactory was inspired by pocket watches of past centuries and tower clocks before the 16th century, which also had only one hand, with which one or the other associates the watch. And the perigraph shares with them the very carefully thought-out design of the indexes on the dial.

As with most traditional watches, the main markings indicate the hours. However, the smaller, easy-to-read markings in between do not represent the individual minutes, but are counted in 5-minute increments. Altogether, the dial has 144 markings in the outer ring alone, which can be read exactly by the very fine hand, which is also due to the high-quality printing of the dial. Apart from about 2-3 minutes, the wearer should therefore not worry about appearing too late for appointments. The individual minutes cannot be read off so accurately and the wearer’s sense of time is much more relaxed. The very much information at first sight can be grasped by the minimalistic design very well.

Interesting and really special is also the second ring, slightly embedded in the dial. At “12 o’clock”, a marker indicates the current date. The ring therefore needs 31 days for a complete revolution. This is also where the perigraph gets its name – Perigraph comes from Greek and means so much “written around something” – obviously when you look at the date ring.

MeisterSinger has achieved a real success with the perigraph – a very elegant watch, which at first sight seems quite unusual, but on the second it captivates with its unique time measurement, its very high-quality workmanship and a legendary design. As a wearer you can count yourself lucky, because you will notice some amazing things. First, his perception of time changes. If the large hand on a conventional watch needs a full turn to indicate an elapsed hour, the fine hour hand only needs a twelfth of that turn – who won’t be calmer in today’s fast-moving world?

Secondly, you will find that it takes very little time to get used to the other way of reading time – thanks to the very structured, straight-line design and the perfect, clean printing on the dial. And thirdly, there will be some people who will look twice at the wrist and try confusedly to read the time. Perfect for those who want to stand out from the crowd and try something new, very individual. The Perigraph is perfect for this. MeisterSinger has already won prestigious design awards such as the red dot Design Award and the GOOD Design Award with this watch.

Since 2001, very special mechanical wristwatches have been manufactured in the Westphalian city of Münster, Germany: They have only one single hand with a fine needle point that enables the wearer to read the time. MeisterSinger-founder Manfred Brassler and his team of 14 co-workers create their classical timepieces with this unique characteristic in the technical and cultural tradition of early watchmaking, as it were tower clocks that – ever since – needed nothing more than one single hand. Despite that one single hand, the time can be easily read in five-minute increments, because Brassler gave his watches the practical, clear readability that classical gauges and measuring instruments still have today.

MeisterSinger is very strong within the domestic market, however the brand is also well established abroad: Barneys in New York or Le Bon Marché in Paris display the single hand watches in their stores. Today the collection includes 21 different series with over 70 watch variations, several of which were already awarded with design prizes, such as red dot Award or German Design Award.
