For the 30th anniversary of its MR-G line, G-SHOCK has built something that did not exist before: the MRG-D5000 (officially MRG-D5000-BDR) wears a bezel made entirely of blue sapphire. Twenty pieces worldwide, from December 2026, at 80,000 euros. Two more models carry the same design idea at prices that do not require selling the house.
Why a sapphire bezel is a hard problem
Sapphire is extremely hard, and that is exactly what makes it awkward. Hard is not the same as tough: a material that barely scratches tends to break under impact rather than give way. In a watch whose entire reason for existing is shock resistance, that is a contradiction. This is the contradiction CASIO set out to resolve.
According to the manufacturer, the MRG-D5000 is the first G-SHOCK whose shock-resistant construction allows components made of blue sapphire at all. It is based on extensive analysis of the forces acting on sapphire during an impact, and the resulting construction is built to protect the material rather than merely house it.
The Multi-Guard structure: assembled, not screwed
At the centre sits the purpose-built MR-G Multi-Guard structure. Case and bezel are not machined from one piece but assembled from several separate components – and they are joined without a single screw. That is less a styling exercise than a necessity: every screw would be a point where force is channelled straight into a brittle material.
Dial: gold on deep blue
The lettering on the dial is finished with a gold vacuum coating. Against the deep blue of the sapphire it is the only warm tone on the entire watch, and it sits exactly where the eye goes anyway. Less would have been dull, more would have tipped into kitsch.
Case back: sapphire and a number out of twenty
Blue sapphire is set into the screw-down case back as well. That is where each of the 20 pieces carries its individual serial number, alongside the words “DREAM PROJECT”. Every MR-G is made at the Yamagata Factory in Japan, where traditional craft meets modern manufacturing technology.
Gallium Tough Solar
The MRG-D5000 runs on Gallium Tough Solar technology, which is particularly resistant to intense light while harvesting energy highly efficiently. On a watch with this much transparent material in front of the cell, that is not a coincidence but a precondition.
DURA-SOFT band with a brick pattern
The watch sits on a DURA-SOFT band with a brick pattern. The same pattern comes back on the dial – a small detail that holds the design together once you look at the watch as a whole.

Blue Rose: the two companions
The MRG-D5000 does not arrive alone. Under the name Blue Rose, two further models carry the same design concept – and for most of us they are the part of the announcement that actually matters.
MRG-B5000SA-2DR: two carats of blue sapphire for 6,600 euros
The MRG-B5000SA carries two carats of faceted blue sapphire on the top and bottom of the case. The bezel is made of Cobarion, a hard specialist alloy, and both case and bezel are finished with a blue Arc Ion Plating (AIP) coating. Limited to 500 pieces.
GMW-B5000SB-1A2ER: full metal with four sapphires for 779 euros
The full-metal GMW-B5000SB carries blue sapphire crystals set at the four positions on the front of the bezel. It is the most restrained of the three – and at 779 euros the only one you put on the shelf without a long conversation with yourself first.

My take
G-SHOCK, now you are going completely over the top. 🙂 80,000 euros for the MRG-D5000 in sapphire, and there are only 20 of them. OK, then please let me be a dealer just once, for exactly one of these watches. HAHAHA. LOL.
I am an absolute square fan, but at this price the fun stops even for me. That one really takes my breath away.
The second square, the MRG-B5000SA-2DR, unfortunately costs 6,600 euros as well. Getting hold of one of the 500 pieces will probably be just as hard. I find it interesting to look at, but I need to see it in the metal. Limitation against price I find “quite good” here: only 500 pieces. On the new MRG-B2100HR it is 7,500 euros for 800 pieces.
The third square is of course the “good” one on price: 779 euros for the GMW-B5000SB-1A2ER in full metal. Whether that is a one-shot production I honestly do not know.
For me, though, only titanium comes into question with the squares. But 6,600 euros?!
In the end I have to say it: I cannot afford any of the new MR-G right now. SADLY!
As soon as one of the three finds its way to me, there will be a review here with my own photos.
